Folks have been using Mulling spices to gussy up cider and wines since the Romans in the second century. As they traveled the world trading and conquering, they brought with them the art of mulling. In Medieval Germany, a drinking ritual called “wassailing” became common during winter and was intended to bestow good fortune upon the following year’s apple harvest. The early 1800s Engliand, young women traveled door to door during the Christmas season singing and offering a bowl of wassail to their neighbors and friends. All these traditions made their way in various forms to the New World and wassail, caroling, and mulling spices are all part of our holiday traditions.
