Magic bath bombs that will sort you into your appropriate magic house? Way better then a manky old hat! And there is glitter! Whether you are seeking a fun DIY craft or looking for a unique way to celebrate Harry Potter…or you are just looking for some good clean fun, this is the craft for you! Magic Bath Bombs!!!
Magic and History and Crafting Oh My!
So you might be wondering what is a blog post about Magic Bath Bombs or Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald doing on this blog? Isn’t it about family adventures, historical stories and holiday celebrations?
YES it is.
But the film opens in just a few days and This Family is SO excited to go see it! We have our cloaks and wands ready along with our historical 1920’s outfits and we are ready for some magical madness in the very best way!
But seriously, why is this post here? Well I gave you a couple hints.
History is Everywhere
First of all I think it’s pretty safe to say J K Rowling is a rather phenomenal story teller and has a pretty good sense of adventure, both things near and dear to the heart of This Family.
One thing I’ve always admired about her storytelling is how she pulls in a lot of culture and religious mythology as well as documented history from our world. When she adds the elements of the fantastical world she created it makes everything that much more believable. Because of this, I’ve found using the Harry Potter series is an excellent segue to conversations and lessons with my daughters.
Basically History is nothing but one never-ending story filled with chapters of protagonists, antagonists, amazing back drops heroes and villains, and all the other key story elements we crave in our story telling. And I love love LOVE that these latest installments of the Wizarding World are in the 1920’s and in the US.
History in Storytelling: Behind the Scenes
We were lucky enough to go on the WB Tour in Hollywood and actually step into some of those key places in the first film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was pretty phenomenal and I may or may not have walked around the set pieces with a pseudo English accent rambling all sorts of muggle and magical speak.
OK I totally did.

It is true though. The most believable make believe stories have grains of truth in them. The Harry Potter series is exceptional at weaving history and mythology with just plain made up. The series continues with venturing to North America and I hear that some of our own history and mythology is to be woven in to the these next stories in the wizarding world.
Bringing the magic home
Feeling rather magical, we thought we’d do something a little on the crafty side (because we do love DIY!) to celebrate the new film. We made Magical Wizarding Sorting Bath Bombs.
YES! MAGIC BATH BOMBS THAT CHANGE COLOR AND TELL YOU WHAT HOUSE YOU BELONG TO!
I love DIY…or as they called it in Colonial times, homespun. There is an art to making things at home. Somehow things are so much more appreciated. It’s also fun and a great way to spend time together. For sure memories will be made and you get some gifts out of it too!!
Assessing the Magic: How We Did
Over all, pretty well, but somehow we botched up the Hufflepuffs pretty good. Poor Puffs, they never seem to be able to catch a break.
Truly I think it was because Sage got a little carried away with the coconut oil. Oil is essential but it is also essential that only the correct amount is used.
Please enjoy Sage’s singing at the end of this video. It is rather magical.
Video not your jam? Here are step by step instructions. I put them on pin-able photos so you could stick them on your fave Pinterest board.
Instructions for Magic Bath Bombs
Tips for Success
Have a clean work space. Little bits of I don’t know what will get into your bath bomb mix very easily.
Do it in the kitchen or on a table with newspaper or something you don’t care about…because food coloring…
Have an adult measure the oil. We had a wee bit more then what was required and it made for some slick bath bombs… and a residue to clean up in the tub afterward.
Easy on the glitter. A little bit goes a looooooooooooooong way.
Send Dad out of the house. Between eh mess and the glitter it’s just better this way.
More Ways to Be Magical
One thing we thought about doing was inserting a ring or a charm in the colorful part of the bath bomb. It would make for a third layer in the bath bomb and would make it even more magical for the user. Sage thought this was the greatest idea of al time. For the record we did end up doing it and it worked perfectly. My only note is that it defiantly should be metal. Something you don’t mind getting wet.
We love a good story, we love bringing history alive, and we love magic, especially when it is home made! If you liked this article be sure to check out Sage’s Colonial Craft series. In the first Video she teaches step by step how to make a quill pen which is not only historically accurate but makes a great project for Harry Potter fans!
