Why create a Treasure Map for local Adventures?
There is adventure and treasure all around us but sometimes we need to look at things through different lenses to see the opportunity to explore. Sometimes we are tired, need coffee, and we just need it laid out for us in simple easy to follow steps.
All these reasons are valid! I want to encourage you to think back to your childhood when imagination reigned and the back yard was FULL of adventure! You created treasure maps out of a napkin and a spy glass out of the paper towel roll. You didn’t really NEED those things per say but remember how it transformed playing in the back yard to an epic quest? I mean, I heard theme music in my head. Did you?
Point is the little things made a big difference. It gave context. So why create a Treasure Map for local adventures? BECAUSE IT’S FUN! And that, my friends, is reason enough.
Early American Explorers
Don’t worry, I am not going to bore you with textbook information here. I just want to point out that all our early American explorers used some way of recording their adventures. The Lakota had the Winter Counts they did on buffalo hides. George Washington kept a detailed accounting as he surveyed the Ohio Valley. These seemingly mundane tasks one day turn into the stories we pass on to future generations. If over the last couple articles you thought to yourself.. ‘Yeah yeah, I’m not getting a stupid notebook. I have everything I need on my cellular device.’ At this time I raise one eyebrow up at you, tell you COME ON! Get with it! Loosen up and have some fun! Go against the grain of tech everything and create something you, your kids, and your grand kids will treasure! No one keeps dad’s old cell phone and SIM card for sentimental value… just sayin….
Transform your Notebook into a Map to Adventure
Let’s start really utilizing that notebook you started in HOW TO PLAN YOUR FAMILY ADVENTURE that will walk you through creating your unique and local adventure bucket list that is catered to your interests.
Step One
If you’ve already defined your True North and written it down, congratulations! You’ve done step one! It’s your mission statement. Your why… your Raison D’etre! Every good adventurer needs that. If you haven’t, pause here, go back to HOW TO PLAN YOUR FAMILY ADVENTURE and do that.
Step Two
You dedicated a page and wrote out a list of Free to Low Cost Adventures. If you have not done that, pause here, go back to HOW TO ADVENTURE WITH NO MONEY, and do that. I’ll wait for you.
Back? Excellent!
Step Three
Creating the actual List. You can for sure do this on your own but I encourage you to join our community of family adventurers! By filling out your first name and email down below, you will be sent a link to the step by step guide (pictured below) to creating your list for local adventures AND instructions for your first adventure! Print it out. Stick it in your ‘About to be Epic Notebook‘.
In full disclosure, you will be signed up to receive our email that will be full of inspiration and ideas for adventures we’ve been on and you can too! You can of course, opt out any time and you should also know we won’t share your information with anyone any time. That’s just rude and pretty sure it breaks fellow adventure code so there will be none of that!
Step Four
You have your compass and you Epic Adventure Book! You have your list of free and low cost adventures, and if you signed up, you got another list of places to start adventuring AND you got sent on your first one! HUZZAH!!!
Time to start actually making the adventures happen! I recommend starting with one a month. Either highlight it on your list or start a new page and title it! That way your amazing epic notebook becomes a scrapbook/adventure journal to jot down notes and thoughts and later put in photos. More on that in the next section…
