Look no further!
Get out the sunflowers and scarecrows and start decorating! It’s harvest time! So many reasons and so many ways to celebrate and honor our unique American history this month!!
Here are 16 of The Best Ways to Celebrate in September!!!!
Are you ready? It’s party time!
Labor Day
According to Wikipedia…Labor Day honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the development, growth, endurance, strength, security, prosperity, productivity, laws, sustainability, persistence, structure, and well-being of the country. Labor Day is the first Monday in September. Suddenly all the BBQs make sense…
Back To School
For most school districts, Labor Day signifies the end of summer and school commences right after. Many American families celebrate this with Back to School Shopping followed promptly by parents doing their happy dances and hi giving each other for making it through another summer of kids 24/7.
Coffee Ice Cream Day
If you love coffee and you love ice cream, this is the day for you! Coffee is a fine American institution that gained popularity when we were doing things like throwing British tea into the ocean and such. I love that it’s adapted appropriately to various seasons. (September 6)
Acorn Squash Day
Acorn Squash is an American original. Whoo Hoo! For you foodies, Acorn Squash falls in the summer squash category but it’s def a fall flavor so September is the perfect time to celebrate it! No one really knows where this official day came from but, I’ll take it! (September 7)
Patriot Day
In memory of the lives lost and people injured in the September 11th attacks. It is customary to take a moment of silence at 8:46 AM EST.
During these terrorist attacks, almost 3,000 people were killed and over 6,000 people were injured. It is considered to be one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in world history and the most devastating attacks on the United States since the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
As per the President, each home should fly the American flag at half mast that day as well as at all government facilities. (September 11)
Mayflower Day
Mayflower Day commemorates the day the ship set sail from Plymouth, England in 1620. Now we all know there is a bunch of controversy about what happened after they arrived in the new world. Regardless of political ideaology, one thing is certain, when the group of Saints and Strangers left, the world was set on a course to be forever changed. It’s a good day to talk about who they really were and what happened next and what it meant/means for our country. (September 16)

Constitution Day
It’s the holiday every American should celebrate in September (and really probably more often than that) but almost no one knows about it. Let’s fix that.
Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17, 1787, recognizing all who are born in the U.S. or by naturalization, have become citizens.
With all this negative hoopla going on in the press, it’s a good day to turn off the political rhetoric and actually read the Constitution. If you feel like a party, there are tons of events nationwide to attend. It is after all, the birthday of our actual government.
Also, there is a really cool proclamation for kids HERE where they agree to read the Constitution.
It may sound a wee boring and not your typical celebration but I/we think it’s important to understand where we come from and our government. Knowledge is never in bad taste. (September 17)
Constitution Week
Because sometimes one day isn’t enough… π The Daughters of the American Revolution started this one and congress agreed to set aside September 17-23 to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The aims of the Constitution Week celebration are to:
- Emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution.
- Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life.
- Encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.
It’s basically a dedicated time to get smart and get excited about this very cool place we call home! (September 17-23)
Talk Like a Pirate day
A personal fave in this household, we have celebrated for years! A totally made up holiday created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol’ Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap’n Slappy) and we couldn’t be more happy about it.
Usually local places get involved with specials and freebies. We’ve done free donuts from Krispie Kreme, free bars of gold at Long John Silvers, and hit up a pirate street party sponsored by a tattoo shop and neighboring businesses. It was a riot!
Look we have some fine pirate history in this nation and if we’re being honest, doesn’t everyone secretly want to be a pirate…at least once? (September 19)
Pepperoni Pizza Day
It’s so popular, it gets its own holiday. Not only that but SURPRISE…pepperoni is not Italian.. it’s 100% American!
It popped up in early 1900’s America and like Chicken Parmesan, was likely created by Italian immigrants who had many butcher shops. American genius.
Today pepperoni is America’s favorite pizza topping and like pirate day, usually there are deals to be had at pizza shops, local to national. (September 20)
Free Museum Day
Hosted by Smithsonian magazine, participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket.
The Museum Day ticket provides free admission for two. Whoo Hoo! (September 21)
First Day of Autumn
Some might lament that this marks the shortening of daylight for a while but I say bring on the pumpkin spice yo! And the sweaters and scarves, and the BOOTS!
This is the official day to start doing all the fun autumn things there are to do!!!! (September 23)
Johnny Appleseed Day
So legend has it Johnny Appleseed was witty and wise and of course, he has a heck of a story… planting apple trees all over then America. The story tells him like a version of Snow White, walking barefoot and dressed in rags, befriending woodland creatures and making everyone generally fall in love with him.
Well, the REAL story is a wee less romantic. He didn’t just scatter the seeds. He planted them with purpose, in nurseries, to make cider. Cider was a big deal then. None the less, he still was legendary and because of his existence, we have a day to celebrate and eat all things apple. (September 26)
This Family Blog Birthday
Yup! We turn one! It’s been a heck of a year. Blogging and blogosphere is a steep learning curve but one I’m SO glad I took the plunge. This whole blog thing has given me a real sense of purpose (To Give Ways for people to enjoy and experience and fall in love with America-because she needs a group hug!)

SO our birthday present to you, our reader community is a year long celebration. We’re remodeling a few rooms the house/pages on the blog and we’re doing give aways… WHAT?! GIVE AWAYS? Yes…

Because first…
National Coffee Day
Agreed upon by the International Coffee Organization, it was launched in Milan in 2015. But you know, coffee started in Ethiopia and if played a very under rated role in the American Revolution and American History in general. And then there is the international phenomenon of Starbucks…
I like to think of coffee as the tie that binds us all. Liquid love…
Personally, I think this should be a revolving door holiday, like the first of every month. Get it started with the right frame of mind.. but for now, I’ll take this day and I will celebrate the everything out of it! (September 29)
Hot Mulled Cider Day
SOMEtimes it is good to detox from all the coffee. If you read ABOUT ME or our trip to LOS RIOS RANCHO, you know cider is my fave fall way to detox.
I feel like this day is the perfect way to end ways to Celebrate in September… wrapping a chilled hand around a warm mug of cider… all those fall spices wafting up. It’s like a little whisper letting you know fall is officially here!
If you read about Johnny Appleseed, you know America has a very interesting history in cider. Go ahead, indulge. (September 30)
As promised…

Some of the ‘days’ can get a little crazy but I love the authentic American ones. And ones I can tie to an actual event or something that makes sense. But yes, there is always a reason to learn something new and/or celebrate!
